‘Overwatch’ things from the Summit on July 9th

July 12

The DOTA 2 centric Beyond the Summit did a teaser tweet showing their signature logo mentioning ‘Overwatch Cup’. This was a confirmation that the organization is planning to expand its roots out of DOTA 2 and venture into less familiar grounds like the Overwatch.

The success of Overwatch even before its release was the public beta, which opened up the flaws and goods of the game to its customers in a move to turn them to loyals. The blend of FPS and MOBA in one superior game fades out the oversaturation of military shooter games like the CoD and CSGO. Worlds gaming hub Korea has witnessed this surge in popularity for Overwatch against LoL. According to the stats by Gametrics, Overwatch has 31.99% of the PC bang market compared to LoLs 24.72%. This is a significant shift in the gaming world, and it will be even more with its induction into Summit 5.

Being an FPS to the core, not every character carries the gun, the roster is split into attackers, support and defenders thus outright offense becomes less and less important. Add to that, a character’s flashy ability is reduced to zero unless ably supported by any team member which in my opinion is a big letdown.  After showing us all the beautiful origin stories of characters, it didn’t have a single player character based mode. The teamwork shown to be the greatest strength of ‘Overwatch’ can be its weakness too because a low-skilled team will often trump a highly-skilled oneon the basis of their composition.

Another drawback one will gather from this game will be the use of one exact strategy for a map with set objectives, which brings less overall variety to it. However the focused game play, charming details, and the endless opportunities make this game a fun ride. But where does it go from here? Will they bring new heroes, maps and modes? Will it rule the genre for long? Time will tell.

Beyond the Summit is largely known for casting DOTA 2 at The Internationals and last year’s Smash Summit, a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament. The invited teams for the Overwatch Cup looks star studded with OG, FDL, FNATIC, DIGITAL CHAOS, NATUS VINCERE, WINGS GAMING, TEAM LIQUID and AD FINEM. The tactics of CSGO put into the strategies of LoL would be a sight worth waiting for and it will be more exciting to see how all the teams react to unfamiliar maps, gameplays and characters.Race to the summit kick starts on July 9th 2016.
