The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is preparing to propose the establishment of the “Olympic Esports Games” at the upcoming 142nd IOC Session during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Currently in advanced discussions with a potential host, the IOC plans to make an official announcement following the finalization of necessary formalities.
The IOC’s exploration into esports began in 2018, guided by its enduring values. IOC President emphasized, “Our values are steadfast, even as we engage with esports.”
The IOC’s initial foray into esports included hosting the Esports Forum in Lausanne in 2018 and forming an Esports Liaison Group, later restructured into the IOC Esports Commission chaired by IOC Member David Lappartient. In 2021, the IOC launched the Olympic Virtual Series as its first venture into esports.
Following the success of the Olympic Virtual Series, the IOC introduced the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore in June 2023. This event brought together the Olympic and esports communities, featuring competitive live finals in collaboration with International Sports Federations (IFs) and game publishers. Over 130 players from around the world competed in 10 mixed-gender category events, embodying the Olympic spirit. The event garnered significant online viewership, with over six million views and more than 500,000 unique participants, predominantly aged between 13 and 34.
Encouraged by the positive reception of the Olympic Esports Week, the IOC President tasked the Esports Commission with exploring the feasibility of creating the “Olympic Esports Games.” The Commission swiftly formulated a proposal, stressing the necessity of establishing a dedicated structure within the IOC, distinct from the traditional Olympic Games’ organizational and financial framework.
The IOC Executive Board (EB) underscored that IFs already involved in virtual versions of their sports would be primary partners for inclusion in the “Olympic Esports Games,” along with National Olympic Committees integrating esports into their programs.
The inception of the Olympic Esports Games signifies a monumental stride for the IOC, demonstrating its commitment to evolution while upholding core values. This initiative not only acknowledges the surging popularity of esports but also aims to imbue the Olympic spirit in a new generation of athletes and enthusiasts. The proposed Olympic Esports Games aspire to provide a platform for showcasing esports excellence, advocating fair play, and fostering global camaraderie.
Anticipation builds globally ahead of the vote at the 142nd IOC Session, underscoring the potential launch of the Olympic Esports Games as a groundbreaking development for both the Olympics and the esports community. This initiative promises to bridge traditional sports and esports, uniting fans and athletes in the pursuit of competition and excellence. The IOC’s proactive approach to integrating esports underscores its dedication to innovation and inclusivity, ensuring that the Olympic Games remain a beacon of inspiration for future generations.
